Five Young Researchers from the FM MU Received Scholarships for the Best Doctoral Students

The prestigious Brno Ph.D. Talent competition announced its winners this year. Both the competing projects and the applicants themselves were evaluated by top scientists, mostly from abroad, but also from the Czech Republic. Out of 130 applications to Brno Ph.D. Talent 2020, 25 first year students of doctoral programmes at Brno Universities were selected. Five of them are studying at our Faculty of Medicine.

This year, the Brno Ph.D. Talent competition recognised 25 young scientific talents, who will receive 300,000,- CZK, to be evenly distributed over a period of three years of study. The funding for the project, which is a part of the Regional Innovation Strategy, is provided for the winners by the statutory city of Brno. The project is then implemented by the South Moravian Centre for International Mobility (JCMM) as it has been for more than 10 years.

Among the winners, there are 15 students from Masaryk University, five of whom are studying at the Faculty of Medicine MU:

Denisa Belisová is studying in the field of cell and tissue morphology. She focuses on the research of fibroblasts, i.e. cells of the connective tissue in the mammary gland. Exploring their origin, plasticity and the mechanisms that control the development and homeostasis of the mammary gland, will serve to develop new treatments for breast cancer in the future.

Anna Hrčková is a doctoral student of molecular medicine. She investigates the molecular mechanisms by which the enzymes DIS3L2 and ISG20L2 recognise and degrade RNA that has already served its purpose or has been poorly processed. She is interested in what role these enzymes play in disease and immunity.

Jaroslav Krč is a doctoral student in the field of psychiatry. He researches methods for improving the state of higher cognitive functions in patients with disorders of such functions. These functions are indispensable for a regular life as they enable goal-oriented behaviour. Krč seeks to combine technologies based on neuron feedback and the brain-computer interface.

Polina Nadtochaeva is a doctoral student of pathological physiology. She studies nanomodified titanium alloys used to create joint replacements. These materials are foreign to the body, so they affect immune cells, which play a key role in inflammatory processes. Nadtochaeva focuses on the activation of macrophages, which will allow her to predict possible postoperative complications.

Roberto Pivato is a student of biochemistry and molecular biology. He is engaged in the research of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a genetic disease affecting men and leading to severe skeletal muscle fibrosis and affecting the heart. He seeks to model the depletion of cardiovascular progenitors using human stem cells from patients with dystrophy, to understand molecular mechanisms and to adjust them.

A list of the winning students can be found on the JCMM website and in Magazine M

In addition to the enthusiasm for the field and the excellent results in previous competitions, knowledge of English for scientific work plays a role. Therefore, we recommend that all our talented doctoral students of the Faculty remember the competition and submit their applications for the next year’s competition. Information about the competition can be found here

Unfortunately, the official award ceremony has not yet taken place due to the pandemic. JCMM tries to be in contact with the winners, for example, through the recently organised lecture: "How to write a winning Project Proposal" by Dr. Ziegelheim, evaluator for the European Commission.
