The matriculation of newly enrolled students in Czech and English programmes took place on Wednesday 22 October 2025 in lecture hall B22/116 of the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University. First‑year students in academic dress gathered to take the matriculation oath, the traditional act that officially admits them to the academic community.
The ceremony opened with fanfares and a procession of academic dignitaries, followed by the national anthem of the Czech Republic and the anthem of the European Union. The event was attended by Dean prof. MUDr. Martin Repko, PhD, and the faculty’s vice‑deans: prof. PhDr. Andrea Pokorná, PhD (Vice‑Dean for Non‑Medical Study Programmes and Information Technology), prof. MUDr. Eva Brichtová, PhD (Vice‑Dean for Student Affairs and External Relations), prof. MUDr. Lydie Izakovičová Hollá, PhD (Vice‑Dean for Dentistry) and assoc. prof. MUDr. Lubomír Křivan, PhD (Vice‑Dean for English Studies and Internationalisation). Two of the officials welcomed students at each of the four blocks.
During the ceremony a selected student representative read the oath, in which the students pledge to fulfil their academic obligations, strive for professional development and uphold the good name of the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University. They then approached the faculty insignia held by the faculty beadle, touched it with their right hand and pronounced “Spondeo” to confirm their commitment. They received their matriculation certificate from the vice‑deans.
Speeches by the faculty leadership emphasised the important role of matriculation at the start of the students’ academic journey and wished them every success in the years ahead. The ceremony concluded, as is traditional, with the student song “Gaudeamus igitur” and fanfares as the dignitaries and newly matriculated students departed.
This year the faculty introduced a novelty for new students: a photo wall in the faculty’s red colour with themed speech bubbles and humorous captions to complement the classic photos taken when the matriculation certificates were presented and the customary shots taken on the iconic footbridge in front of the faculty. The images were shared on social media as a memento of students’ first official day in the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University.
Statistics show participation numbers for this year’s matriculation: 160 international students were matriculated; a total of 490 students enrolled in the General Medicine or Dentistry programmes; and a further 295 students were matriculated in bachelor programmes and the field of Embryology. These figures reflect the sustained interest in studying at the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University, and the diversity of both domestic and international students.
