SIMU’s second Basics of Laparoscopy on Box and Virtual Simulators I

On 10–11 October 2022, the second course focused on the use of box and laparoscopic simulators was held at the FM MU Simulation Centre. The two-day event entitled "Basics of Laparoscopy on Box and Virtual Simulators I" was designed for pre-certification physicians focusing on mini-invasive surgery.

The course brought together 5 doctors (surgeons) from district and university hospitals in Bohemia and Moravia. The lecturers of the course were MUDr. Zdeněk Chovanec Ph.D. and MUDr. Filip Sasínek (Ist surgical clinic of St. Anna University Hospital, Brno), together with invited MUDr. Tomáš Paseka (SurCal Clinic, Brno).

The course continues the tradition of laparoscopic courses held at the 1st Virtual Surgery Simulation Centre at the 1st Surgical Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University since 2014.

The course started with a short presentation focused on the possibilities of training young surgeons and simulation as a teaching technique. Different types of simulators were presented with their advantages and shortcomings, because as we know, there is no perfect laparoscopy simulator. Finally, the Simulation Centre in its complexity was presented, but this was only a brief introduction as the main aim of the course is to learn new laparoscopic skills.

In the practical part, the work with the camera was mainly trained on the virtual reality simulators, with 0 and 30-degree optics, then each participant completed a basic skills course with training in the coordination of the movement of both hands, head and legs. On the box simulators, mainly two-handed coordination was trained through a plethora of manual exercises and this time, also the basics of laparoscopic suturing. The theoretical part included presentations on Laparoscopic Appendectomy, Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy with some practice and highlighting Tips and Tricks in the subject.

As each participant had their simulator, it was possible to adapt the individual exercises to their manual skills, i.e. it was a tailor-made course.

During the course, each participant performed several laparoscopic appendectomies and cholecystectomies on virtual reality simulators and learned the basics of laparoscopic suturing and knotting in box simulators.
