As part of the pilot, we used team-based learning with 17 motivated 4th and 5th year students to practice history taking and present illness together, as well as hands-on training in the clinical examination of a paediatric patient (infant).

In the next part, we practiced teaching practical clinical skills used in paediatrics (examination of paediatric modification of the Glasgow Coma Scale, treatment of the newborn and determination of Apgar score, mask ventilation of the infant, peripheral vein cannulation, provision of intraosseous access and catheterisation of infants of both sexes).

At the end, the students could try a high-fidelity simulation of the management of paediatric patients with obstructive bronchitis and acute laryngitis.

It was very valuable for us to get the subsequent feedback from students, which led us to further efforts to improve the teaching. We firmly believe that students will enjoy the new teaching format, which will contribute to deepening their knowledge.

Many thanks to the team of teachers from the Paediatric Clinic of the Brno University Hospital Brno and the FM MU, who participated in the preparation of the course under the guidance of the course supervisor doc. MUDr. Petr Jabandžiev, Ph.D., namely MUDr. Milena Burianová, Ph.D., MUDr. Petra Kostroňová, MUDr. Beáta Krejčířová, MUDr. Martin Jouza, MUDr. Martin Štěrba and MUDr. Marek Jeřábek.

Classes at SIMU will begin in the autumn semester of 2022.
