This Year Already the Third Basics of Laparoscopy on Box and Virtual Simulators at SIMU

On 12–13 December 2022, the third course focused on minimally invasive surgery using box and laparoscopic simulators was held at the FM MU Simulation Centre. The course called " Basics of Laparoscopy on Box and Virtual Simulators I" is intended for doctors before attestation with a focus on mini-invasive surgery, i.e. not only for surgeons, but also for urologists and gynaecologists.

The course has now brought together six doctors (surgeons) from both Bohemia and Moravia. The lecturers of the course were MUDr. Zdeněk Chovanec, Ph.D. and MUDr. Filip Sasínek (First Department of Surgery of St. Anna University Hospital, Brno).

The course continues the tradition of laparoscopic courses held at the 1st Virtual Surgery Simulation Centre at the First Department of Surgery of the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University since 2014.

The course started with a short presentation focused on the possibilities of training young surgeons and simulation as a teaching technique. Different types of simulators were presented with their advantages and shortcomings, because as we know, there is no perfect laparoscopy simulator. Finally, the Simulation Centre in its complexity was presented, but this was only a brief introduction, as the main aim of the course was to learn, or rather to deepen, new laparoscopic skills.

In the practical part, the work with the camera was mainly trained on virtual reality simulators, with 0 and 30-degree optics. Afterwards, each participant completed a basic skills course with training in coordination of movement of both hands, head and legs. More recently, participants compared their motor skills in bimanual performance of simple tasks using conventional and then mini-invasive tools. In particular, bimanual coordination was trained on box simulators through a plethora of manual exercises and with the basics of laparoscopic suturing. In the theoretical part, presentations were given on Laparoscopic Appendectomy, Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy with penetration into practice and highlighting Tips and Tricks in the subject.

As each participant had their own simulator. It was possible to adapt the individual exercises to their manual skills, so again it was a tailor-made course.

During the course, each participant performed several laparoscopic appendectomies, some also performed laparoscopic cholecystectomies on virtual reality simulators, and all learned the basics of laparoscopic suturing and knotting in box simulators.

The next course is planned for spring 2023. If you are interested in the course content, you are cordially invited.

MUDr. Chovanec Zdeněk, Ph.D on behalf of the organizing team
