Description The best known venomous arthropods as a potential threat to humans are aculeate hymenopterans (bees or wasps), scorpions and ubiquitous spiders. However only a few spider species can cause symptoms. Despite common arachnophobia and me-dialised cases emerging every summer spiders, there is not a serious threat for humans in Czechia. The symptoms, if any, are only local in vast majority of cases. They are variable, there are no com-mon features that would allow diagnos¬ing spider bites. The differential diagnosis is wide with bites from other arthropods, skin infections, exposure to irritating physical and chemical agents, or other dermatoses. We review the incidence of spider bites, describe venom gland and venom itself, symptoms, differential diagnosis, and possible therapy. Beside the situation in Czechia we describe also the situation abroad and among spider breeders.
