Description The publication Basis of Palaeopathology is based on palaeopathological examinations of skeletons from archaeological sites and data from palaeopathological literature. The book begins with a description of a history of palaeopathology, followed by the chapter describing developmental defects of the bones and degenerative diseases of joints. Peri-mortem and post-mortem fractures are discussed in the chapter 6. The treponematoses, lepra and tuberculosis are covered in the chapter 7 and 8, the chapter 9 discusses tumors. Other chapters describe anaemias, metabolic, endocrine diseases, varia and diseases of the teeth. The experiences of the authors will make it possible for anyone with a sound knowledge of human osteology and skeletal morphology to conduct a basic descriptive palaeopathological analysis of skeletons. Such an approach also serves to educate as to the complexity and controversy surrounding the identification, classification, and etiology of many bone diseases.
