Description Quarternary benzo[c]phenanthridine alkaloids display a wide spectrum of biological effects and they are discussed as a potential cytostatics. We compared effects of major alkaloids sanguinarine and chelerythrine with a minor derivates sanguirubine, chelirubine, sanguilutine, chelilutine and macarpine. Our results showed that IC50 values of tested alkaloids were comparable with IC50 of routinly used cytostatics. Cytotoxicity of individual alkaloids decreased in this order: MA-SL-CHL-SR-CHR-SA-CHE. HeLa and A-2780 were the most sensitive cell lines. All tested alkaloids appeared to be inductors of apoptosis.
