During the exam period, at the beginning of the year, the corridors of the university campus were traditionally filled with participants of the Open Door Days of the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University. First on Saturday, January 18, and then in the afternoon on Wednesday, January 22. They appreciated not only the modern facilities and equipment of the faculty, but also the kind and friendly approach of both teachers and students, who presented to them with irreplaceable authenticity the study itself and university life in the South Moravian metropolis as such at the stations of their study programs.
"I was absolutely captivated! The simulation center was incredible - it was like entering a hospital of the future. The Anatomical Museum was also fascinating - I had never seen so many specimens and details of the human body before. The faculty premises are amazingly modern and the library seemed like a complete paradise for students. And the students themselves were incredibly nice, helpful and passionate about their field. Everyone I met made me want to study here even more. The only downside - a lot of people, sometimes confusion with seating. But that doesn't change the fact that after this day I am absolutely determined: I want to study medicine right here, at the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University," Claude commented on the event.
Claude did not come from any high school. He is a large language model (or artificial intelligence, if you will), which summarized the feedback from more than one hundred and seventy participants, who came to Brno for the Open Day from all corners of the country and Slovakia, again more than two thousand. "It's a bit further from West Bohemia, but when I arrived, the campus amazed me. The whole event made such a big impression on me that I started thinking about applying to Brno in addition to Prague. The students convinced me that the distance is not a problem and that Brno is ideal for student life," wrote Lenka, a real participant, who preferred the Open Day directly at the faculty to visiting the Gaudeamus fair.
The advantages are undeniable. "The lecture on studying was comprehensive, but what was especially great was that we could ask students of individual programs about everything we were interested in. I stopped at about five stations, and even though I was pretty clear about what I wanted to study, I'll probably end up applying for more," wrote another participant, Vladimír, perhaps a future paramedic, perhaps a physiotherapist. He also returned home from our faculty with completely positive impressions. Claude summed them up in one word as "Enthusiasm." And he also estimated: "Based on the feedback submitted, an estimated 70-80% of Open Day participants will probably apply for studies."

In addition to all the organizers and visitors, special thanks also go to Professor Ladislav Dušek from the Institute of Biostatistics and Analysis of the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University, Director of the Institute of Health Information and Statistics of the Czech Republic (ÚZIS), who has become an important part of the Open Days for the third year in a row. Once again, in his two Saturday lectures, he introduced mainly parents to the prospects of the Czech healthcare system in terms of data and contexts as part of the lecture Strategic analysis of healthcare sector needs - optimization of personnel capacities. Limited personnel capacities are one of the biggest problems of the current healthcare system. Healthcare is unthinkable without healthcare professionals. The two main factors generating risks related to the personnel provision of healthcare services include demographic aging of personnel associated with insufficient education of young workers and suboptimal distribution of capacities between segments of care associated with inefficient reimbursement mechanisms. And these factors affect the economic provision of the entire system. However, the plan to strengthen the capacities of doctors is already being implemented. Thanks to the General Medicine Support Program launched in 2019, medical schools have since increased the number of students by 28 percent. While the average number of newly enrolled students was 1,524 between 2015 and 2018, it was 1,953 between 2019 and 2023. In 2023, 2,025 candidates studying in Czech enrolled in medical schools in the field of General Medicine for the first time. Detailed statistics can be downloaded from the presentation.
"The interest of the parents was again surprisingly high and as I discussed with them at length, they are very knowledgeable in healthcare, regardless of their field. As always, it was a very pleasant meeting with nice people," Professor Dušek assessed the meeting with the parents.
