Deasease prevention once again at the Brno Prevention Days!

On Thursday afternoon, 13th April, Svobody Square was transformed into a large health clinic. The Brno Prevention Days, a campaign organised by the Brno City Council in cooperation with other partners, started here. Its aim is to provide the public with information on how to take care of their health while preventing various diseases.

The MU Faculty of Medicine was represented by ten female students who willingly and eruditely answered the questions of the visitors. Future nutritional therapists recommended the right diet for different types of diseases, future nurses advised what to include in a home pharmacy and the youngest visitors prepared a fun puzzle that taught them about anatomy. Visitors were able to test their eyesight and also learn about the anatomy of the eye from the students of optics, optometry and orthoptics.

Cancer prevention with a focus on reproductive health is the theme of the Co-Safe project and the students of General Medicine, associated with the IFMSA organisation, enlightened the visitors on HPV - human papillomavirus. From the COCO section, the students came with models showing practical breast and testicular self-examination procedures that can effectively prevent the serious disease. Visitors from secondary schools could find out details about the LF MU Junior Academy or about participation in the High School Vocational Activities.

Representatives of the management of cooperating organizations, including the University Hospital Brno, the Trauma Hospital, the Hospital of the Brothers of Mercy, the Centre for Cardiovascular and Transplant Surgery, the National Centre for Nursing and Non-Medical Health Professions, and the Masaryk Institute of Oncology, were on the podium. The MU Faculty of Medicine was in good company, and Vice Dean Andrea Pokorná thanked the students for the excellent representation of the faculty and emphasized the importance of prevention in every branch of health care. It is better to prevent diseases than to fight them!

The weather was not very favourable to us, which made us all the more pleased with the great interest of the visitors. Thank you to all those actively involved and we look forward to next year.

The Brno Prevention Days continue until 30th April 2023, and our faculty joined them once more, on Monday 17th April with a lecture on Cancer Prevention. In Hall A. Trýba on Komenský náměstí, students of General Medicine welcomed those interested in this topic. First they were introduced to the basics of anatomy and then their attention was focused on the introduction of all types of papillomavirus. In the second part, the audience learned the practical procedures of breast and testicular self-examination. Prevention days are not only beneficial for the general public. They also benefit our students by practicing communication and presenting to the public.
