Masaryk University organises an annual university-wide Open Day. One day, when applicants can visit three different programs at selected faculties. The event is organised in cooperation with the university rectorate by the students themselves – they coordinate their teams, prepare the program, and welcome hundreds of enthusiastic applicants to their faculty. At our faculty, two programs run simultaneously, allowing visitors to gain a detailed understanding of the faculty environment, learn about all study programs in the Czech language, experience practical training, and receive valuable advice for the admission process.
The program was divided into two parts:
- The first block introduced the study of General Medicine, the Bioanalytical Laboratory Diagnostics in Healthcare – Embryology, and nine bachelor’s programs.
- The second block was dedicated to applicants interested in Dentistry or Dental Hygiene.
Hands-on demonstrations at SIMU and the Anatomical Institute
The program at the SIMU Simulation Centre, which this year hosted applicants on the 4th floor for the first time, attracted great interest. Visitors could try:
- administering an intramuscular injection,
- working with an auscultation simulator,
- inserting a nasogastric tube,
- a basic laparoscopic simulator,
- and exploring the Anatomage Table with CT scans and body sections.
In the operating theatres, applicants experienced preparation for a sterile environment, practised surgical handwashing, and saw an intubated mannequin. In the ICU rooms, a high-fidelity mannequin was presented, showcasing advanced simulation training.
“Open Day was once again a success this year, welcoming a record number of applicants. I believe they enjoyed their time at our faculty and left with new information and perhaps even a clearer idea of where their future academic steps will lead. I look forward to welcoming some of them soon as fellow students. A huge thank you goes to the student team, who did an amazing job as always – without them, this event would not be possible – and also to the Faculty of Medicine and the Rectorate for their support,” said Ema Záleská, coordinator of the first block.
Dentistry: from microscopes to impressions
The program for applicants to Dentistry and Dental Hygiene took place on the second floor of SIMU. Visitors could try:
- working with a microscope and proper ergonomics,
- simulators for dental procedures,
- tooth-brushing techniques on a large model,
- scanning and conventional impression-taking on a model or volunteer.
“For me, Open Day is a great opportunity for applicants to explore the faculty premises, meet future classmates, and try out a few practical skills from the field,” added Sára Blahová, coordinator of the second block.
In total, 689 applicants out of 840 registered attended the event, accompanied by 475 parents. The program was managed by a student team of 44 members, led by two student coordinators and supported by the Simulation Center and the Anatomical Museum.
