Description Amblyopia is a condition in which there is significantly reduced visual acuity in the apparently healthy eye. It develops in an early childhood during the critical period of brain development. During this time the visual cortex is extremely sensitive to visual input. If the visual input is abnormal, deficits occur and amblyopia develops. Besides low visual acuity there are other visual functions that are affected (stereoacuity, contrast sensitivity, etc.) Traditional therapy approach is patching the good eye. The point is to force the brain to use the input form the amblyopic eye. However, this therapy is has many drawbacks. The new experiments shows there might be another options in treating amblyopia. The key role of inhibition/excitation ratio has been identified and accordingly new treatment strategies have been suggested. Among the most promising is the pharmacological manipulation and the concept of perceptual learning.
