Description While microscopy with hematoxylin and eosin stain remains the gold standard of morphologic diagnosis, newer techniques such as immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy and molecular genetics have been increasingly used for more precise diagnosis of tumors. On 87 consecutive NSCLC patients, the authors examined whether EGFR mutation analysis slowed down the diagnosis and delayed the treatment. The average duration of mutation analysis in the study was 16 days, which was considered perfectly satisfactory.
