Description The lines of Blaschko were first described by Alfred Blaschko in 1901. The pattern of these lines reflects cell migration from the neural crest cells. Keratinocytes and melanocytes follow this migratory pattern during embryogenesis, implying that the majority of disorders involve the epidermis. The appearance of the lines represents genetic or functional mosaicism. The lines are generally linear on the extremities, S-shaped on the abdomen, V-shaped on the central back, and whorled on the scalp. In general, these mutations lead to abnormal appearing skin either via keratinization or dyspigmentation. Many entities follow the lines of Blaschko, such as incontinentia pigmenti, Coltz syndrome, epidermal nevus, and others.
