Description Erectile dysfunction is defined as an inability to achieve and maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse. It affects 54% of Czech men aged 35–65 years. Erectile dysfunction in men aged 30–60 years and in diabetics is a predictor of serious cardiovascular disease in 2–5 years’ time. Modern treatment of erectile dysfunction involves the administrations of phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors. It is safe and well-tolerated. A novel treatment method involves low intensity extracorporeal shock wave therapy which leads to neovascularisation. Penile rehabilitation therapy using oral or intracavernosal agents is indicated in both oncological patients and those suffering from cardiovascular disease for the prevention of irreversible damage.
