Description The chapter concerning the Czech Republic is part of a book that provides information on the didactics of physical education and sports in 24 European countries. The current form of Physical Education in the Czech Republic reflects almost a 30-year period of changes and reforms that took place in the Czech Republic after the political changes in the society in 1989. In 1995, a physical and health-oriented concept of Physical Education was chosen, which aim is to promote health through adequate physical activity. Physical Education and Health Education are integrated in the educational area “Man and Health” as part of compulsory education. PE didactics has been developed for individual educational stages, it is based on Pedagogy and General Didactics, and is also part of Kinanthropology. The beginnings of Czech didactic research in Physical Education date back to the 1950s when physical load of pupils and the use of time for active movement during a PE lesson were monitored. Extensive didactic research has been complemented by other research tools, such as questionnaires, individual and group interviews, assessment scales of didactic aspects of a teaching lesson, the think-aloud method, individual teachers’ records with varying length of retrospection, proxy-reports, etc. The fundamental problem of the Czech Physical Education is that the desired congruence in the educational line has not yet been achieved: basic value – designed content of education (designed curriculum) – realization of curriculum in school practice – learning outcomes. Achieving congruence among individual educational factors should be the main goal of current Physical Education in the Czech Republic.
