Description Although studies to date show that psychotherapy is an effective method of treating psychosomatic problems, it does not achieve the same efficacy for these disorders as it does for depression and other mental health problems. This raises the question of what works in psychotherapy for psychosomatic problems and how. In this paper, we summarize the findings of the three-year project entitled Effectiveness of psychotherapy in patients with medically unexplained physical symptoms (GA18-08512S). We summarize (1) findings regarding the effectiveness of therapy in different domains of clients' lives (e.g., somatic symptoms, depression, anxiety, and mental well-being), (2) insights into the mechanisms likely underlying therapeutic change, and (3) the experience of clients themselves as captured retrospectively through katamnestic interviews. In doing so, we use data from 290 clients who completed a comprehensive daily-based therapeutic program in seven health care facilities in the Czech Republic.
