Description Heated tobacco is a relatively new tobacco product. In the Czech Republic, it has been available since 2017; in the year 2022, it was regularly used by approximately 7% of the population aged 15 and over. The aerosol composition is similar to the composition of cigarette smoke and its effects on the respiratory epithelium are compa-rable (development of inflammation, remodeling, proliferation, mitochondrial dysfunction, carcinogenesis). This review presents the current knowledge on the health effects of heated tobacco. Its use triggers etiopathogenetic processes similar to those involved in the development of some respiratory diseases (COPD, lung cancer) and an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases; in pregnant women, it is associated with a greater risk of fetal allergies and growth restriction. Heated tobacco is a weak source of air pollution and people exposed to it may be at risk of the consequences of secondhand smoking. For some non-smokers, it is a gateway to smoking and may thus promote the development of nicotine dependence. In current smokers, it does not cure the addiction, but main-tains and exacerbates it. Likewise, it puts ex-smokers at risk of relapse. The European Respiratory Society (2018) and the World Health Organization (2020) warned against its use. No tobacco products are without risk. The role of health professionals remains to persistently inform and warn about their harmful effects.
