Description Association of the genetic polymorphism in the Receptor of Advanced Glycation End products (RAGE) gene with diabetic nephropathy (DN) in patients with both type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus was studied. Significant difference in allele frequencies of the 2184A/G between ESRD subgroup and non-DN group was found (P=0.021, Fisher exact test. Moreover, marginally significant association of allele D with DN was detected for the I/D ACE polymorphism (P= 0.075). The presented data indicate that the 2184A/G polymorphism in the RAGE gene could be regarded as one of genetic risk factors for DN. Association of this polymorphism with susceptibility to develop DN and rate of progression and severity of DN is a subject of ongoing study.
