Description Behavioural, hormonal and immune changes induced by bilateral olfactory bulbectomy (OB) in rodents resemble symptoms of human depression. These changes are sensitive to chronic antidepressant therapy. The aim of the study was to compare the effects of classical antidepressants and the effects of amisulpride, felbamate and tiagabine on locomotor activity, stress hormones plasma levels and leukocyte phagocytosis in the rat model of depression - in olfactory bulbectomized animals. Behavioural data showed a significant antidepressant-like effect in all drugs tested. OB-related immune deficit, suppressed leukocyte phagocytosis, was normalized by chronic felbamate treatment. Tiagabine desinhibited the leukocyte phagocytosis in both, sham-operated and OB rats. At the same time we observed a tendency to normalization of changes in the stress hormones plasma levels in bulbectomized rats after tiagabine treatment.
