Description Hearing is often thought of as a second-class sense in comparison to vision. Nevertheless, it cannot be said unequivocally to be less important. The text deals with similarities and dissimilarities between hearing and vision or touch. First, it compares the environmental nature of visual and auditory stimuli and observes some particularities of hearing, concerning its relatedness with touch, constant readiness and time-boundness. It is followed by an overview of various metaphorical attributes traditionally ascribed to hearing and vision. In the light of anthropological studies, these traditional characteristics turn out to be culturally bound, and according to some authors, they are a matter of a cognitive style rather than of real qualities of the sensory modalities. Nevertheless, there is an environmental and bodily ground for differences between hearing and vision. Understanding the specificity of hearing may be important for grasping the relationship of a human to the environment.
