Description Foreign language learning strategies are the main part of the key competency for learning. The use of the learning strategies was investigated at the end of compulsory education, e.g. at the end of elementary education in the Czech Republic. The SILL inventory (Oxford 1990) was applied. Most of the pupils learned English and English was their preferred language. The first language they started to learn was English too, mostly at the age of 9 - 10. The foreign language learning strategies were used only sometimes, not systematically by the pupils at the age of 15 – 16. Before all they did not use efficient memory strategies, which are very important for foreign language acquisition.
