Description Antipsychotic aripiprazole, a dopamine D2 receptor ligand, has a number of other possible mechanisms of action including its action at serotonin (5-HT) and adrenergic receptors, that may be important in the treatment of depressive disorders. Preclinical studies demonstrate the immunotropic effects of atypical neuroleptics. In the present study the well-established olfactory bulbectomy (OB) rat model of experimental depression was used. Our study was aimed to address the question of the behavioural effect of aripiprazole and its possible effect on the cell immune function. Aripiprazole exhibited a significant positive influence on the impaired leukocyte phagocytosis in the OB rats serving as model of depression without any effect on this cellular immunological parameter in the sham-operated controls.
