Description This work assesses the results achieved by using photodynamic therapy with Visudyne (PDT) for predominantly classic and occult subfoveal choroidal neovascular membrane (CNV) in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). PDT is a two-stage treatment process involving the intravenous administration of drugs with the subsequent activation of a diode laser of wavelength 689 nm. The group included 49 patients (36 women and 13 men) of ages ranging from 40 to 89 years (mean = 72.7 years), either with predominantly classic CNV (27x), or completely occults CNV (22x). Tracking time for all patients was 24 months. Visual acuity of treated eyes was measured throughout the observation period using the ETDRS optotype in logMAR units for statistical evaluation. An indication for treatment of recurrent CNV reperfusion was demonstrated by fluorescence angiography. Mean visual acuity prior to study was set at 0.722 logMAR. At the end of a two-year follow-up period was 0.951 logMAR. Patients lost during the follow on average 2.49 line ETDRS optotype. This means that to prevent severe loss of visual acuity, which is considered a loss of 3 or more ETDRS lines of optotypes. The average number of PDT sessions was 1.7 (range 1-5). PDT with Visudyne in the file confirmed the patients during the two-year period, its ability to prevent severe loss of visual acuity.
