Description The aim of this study was to explore self-harming behavior among children of secondary school age. This quantitative study was a pilot research for project, which deals with self-harming behavior and its context. In the study sample (n=235) we found more than 25% of children who admitted their own self-herming experience. We also found more than 60% of children, who had mediated self-harming experience by peers. One of the objectives of this study was to identify the most common techniques of self-harming injuries. The most frequent technique was scratching without location (53%), than hitting oneself (48.5%) and wrist cutting (45.5%). We also found the correlation between cultures which are open to self-harm (Emo, Goth) and the occurence of self-harm. Furthermore, we detected a relationship between self-harm and ideas about suicide. We also confirmed a correlation between self-harm and substance abuse. We hope that results of this study should help to understand the self-harming behavior, which is currently widespreading among school-aged children. It should be a useful guide for those, who are working with the youth.
