In terms of origin, chemical composition and structure, the cell wall can be regarded as an extracellular matrix, but evidence of its structural and functional relation to the cytoplasm is still missing. The objective of the project is to elucidate relat ionships between cytoskeletal components (actin and tubulin) and the cell wall during its growth, de novo formation, in the period of increased turnover, i.e., during cell vegetative growth, at mating, at sporulation and during protoplast regeneration. T he project will also include investigations into links between the cytoplasm and cell wall by means of transmembrane proteins of integrin type, into molecular linkers between the cytoskeleton and transmembrane proteins and into interactions between these proteins and cell wall polymers. The microorganisms used as models will be the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe in various phases of the cell cycle, the protoplasts of these species during regenerati
