Description Functional disorders of the digestive tract are among the most common diseases in this field. Irritable bowel syndrome is one of the most common conditions of this type. It can take many forms in clinical practice, which is why it can be a diagnostically confusing disease to pinpoint. It is always necessary to make sure that the disease is not an organic one, which could severely threaten the patient, if left undiscovered. We compare the views of professor Maratka, who carefully described the condition in 1968, with current findings. It shows that there have been no significant changes in the description of the disease's clinical picture and attitudes to its treatment since then and irritable bowel remains a disease decreasing significantly the patients' quality of life and remains a diagnostic challenge.
