Interview: We are not very good at making sex cells as a human species
Nicola Silva from the Department of Biology has long been studying the inheritance of chromosomes from one generation to the next, focusing on the phase of meiosis during which sex cells are formed. Together with colleagues from the research group, he discovered a protein that regulates the formation of the synaptonemal complex—a protein "zipper" that plays a key role in chromosome pairing and stabilization. The new findings, published in the journal Nature Communications, are a remarkable lead for scientists researching infertility.
