Description The study compares the differences between energy intake and expenditure of 60 men and 60 women divided by BMI and % body fat into 3 groups (a group of obese, overweight and normal weight). In the research the methods of bioimpedance analysis, indirect calorimetry and questionnaire survey with 3 days diary record were used. The results were statistically evaluated by regression analysis. The aim of this paper was to clarify the causes of overweight and obesity in the population. Study results suggest that overweight and obesity in men are caused by excess energy intake. On the contrary, women may be overweight or obese due to insufficient energy intake, undervalued diet and slow metabolism.
