Description St. Johns wort is a herbal antidepressant with proven efficacy comparable to classical antidepressants with fewer side effects. However the effects of St. Johns wort extracts on the immune system function have not been extensively studied yet despite alterations of the immune system functions are known in depressed patients. In the present study we tested the effect of LI 160 standardized herbal extract (analysis by coworkers 2,3) on leukocyte phagocytic activity in the rodent model of depression, the olfactory bulbectomized (OB) rat. The activity of leukocyte zymosan-induced phagocytosis was examined via measurement of chemiluminiscence potentiated by luminol. In LI 160 (100 mg/kg/day, 10 days i.p.) treated OB rats a significant (p<0.05) inhibition of the OB-related hyperactivity was observed. LI 160 did not produce any sedative effect on the locomotion of the sham-operated rats. Thus the present data confirm an antidepressant-like behavioural impact of LI 160 in the OB rat model of depression. The immune data showed an immunostimulant effect of the St. Johns wort standardized extract LI 160, which might be important in clinics.
