| Description | The book deals with the processes of teaching and learning in Czech lower-secondary English classes. The focus of the study is on the opportunities for the development of language skills. The first part of the book presents the general trends and contemporary approaches to English education from both the national and the international point of view, opportunities to learn and language skills as the theoretical concepts and the state of art within the Czech and international context. In the second part of the book the focus is put on the research study which is a part of the IRSE Video Study employing a video-based methodology. The aim is to find to what extent the English classes offer opportunities to develop language skills listening, speaking, reading and writing. A research instrument – a system of categories and its development is described as well as the quantitative and the selective qualitative analyses. The research findings answer the questions about the opportunities to develop language skills and the extent of their integration and the proportion of communication in the target language and the mother tongue in English classes. |
