| Description | Rheumatoid arthritis is a serious, chronic, autoimmune inflammatory disease, affecting roughly 1% of the population. The disease is characteristic by the presence of chronic synovitis, which leads to destruction of the joint cartilage, erosion of the subchondral bone and to development of joint deformities. Most of the patients have additional symptoms as well, affecting various organs apart from the joint damage. The disease can shorten the patient's life expectancy by up to 10 year. The damage to the locomotor system limits the patient physical capabilities, leads to disability and decreases the quality of life. Significant progress has been made recent in treatment of patients with this disease. Diagnosis became more precise, mostly due to newly introduced classification criteria for rheumatoid arthritis. Modern imaging method like ultrasonography and magnetic resonance are now being used for early diagnosis. Prognostic factors and risk factor have been described, which enable us to identify patient with a higher risk of adverse development of the disease. Another thing that improved the quality of care for patient with RA was introduction of composite scoring indexes to monitor the disease's progress. A critical breakthrough however came in the form of discovery of biological preparations and their implementation into therapeutic algorithms. The reach goal of treatment should now be remission of the disease which has been newly defined. Other new therapeutic goal include prevention of irreversible changes to the locomotor system, prevention of long-term disability as well as decreas quality of life. |
