Description Sepsis is a life-threatening condition. It is a syndrome arising as a dysregulated systemic response of the patient to infection, leading to a new organ dysfunction. From a simple point of view, it is a reaction of the organism, which is aimed at eradicating the infection, but it has got out of control and endangers the life of the host. It is associated with high mortality and often long-term consequences for surviving patients. Its incidence is still high and remains one of the most common causes of death with an estimated mortality of about 20-40%. Sepsis is also the cause of death in about a third of patients who die in hospital. Prevention is the earliest possible recognition and initiation of adequate treatment.
