Keywords Chlamydia pneumoniae - myocardial infarction - serological tests
Description Blood sera from 156 patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and from 67 control persons were tested for antichlamydial antibodies. Complement fixation test titres ranging from 1:4 to 1:16 were found in 28 of 155 AMI samples (18.9 %) and a titre 1:4 in 3 of 67 (4.5 %)control samples (p less than 0.01). Positive ELISA C. pneumoniae anti-LPS IgA were found in 89 of 155 AMI samples (57 %) and in 22 of 67 controls; the difference was also highly significant. Conclusions: 1. C. pneumoniae can play an important role in the aetiology of atherosclerosis leading to AMI. 2. ELISA anti-LPS can be recommended for the routine serological diagnostics of C. pneumoniae. 3. The complement fixation test is still suitable for the screening of human chlamydiosis.
