Description Valproic acid is a broad-spectrum antiepileptic drug with low toxicitiy profile. It has been marketed since 1967, firstly brought out in France. Its importance in the clinical practice is augmented by the use in other indications. Valproic acid is also prescribed in the treatment of headache, affective disorders and spinal muscular atrophy. Recently, valproic acid has appeared in the focus of attention in the neurooncology field as well. As histone deacetylase inhibitor causes hyperacetylation and reexpression of growth regulatory genes and as a consequence induces apoptosis. In preclinical studies it has been proved that valproic acid is able to inhibit cell proliferation and migration and increases the imunogenicity of tumoral cells. Brain tumors are often accompanied by the symptomatic epileptic seizures depending on the histology and localisation of the tumor. The epilepsy is not seldom farmacoresistant. Being able to take advantage of antiepileptic and antitumoral effect of valproic effect, we get a specific option in the treatment of symptomatic seizures in brain tumors.
