Description Thymus tumours, from which an epithelial type - thymoma - is the most common one, are a rare type of tumours located in the anterior mediastinum. The following article should bring information about diagnostics, histological types and the treatment modalities for these tumours, especially the newer surgical procedures. The treatment differs according to the stage of the detected thymoma. For the first two stages, surgical treatment is sufficient; in advanced cases of stage III and stage IVa, chemotherapy is used and radiotherapy is indicated following the surgery. In the stage IVb, the only remaining option is usually palliative chemotherapy, even though modem preparations of the biological treatment category are starting to appear in recent thymoma studies (cetuximab). The types of chemotherapy in use, along with their results are listed in the article as well. Prognostic factors include histology, stage, how radical does the resection need to be and the presence of myasthenic issues. In the final pan of the article, an interesting case study is presented, of a patient suffering from an advanced thymoma, after treatment with both first and second line treatment modalities, with cardiac complication, who has been treated at our institution.
