| Description | The relationship between power, money and states in the international environment is one of the least researched areas of international relations. The publication Europe in international monetary system seeks to at least partially remedy this deficit. Insufficient research within this area can be attributed to the fact that social scientists rely heavily on the approach to money taken by mainstream economics. The first part of the book therefore introduces the main theoretical approaches to money and posits some implications of these for the study of international relations. The main arguments used to interpret the most important events in the development of the European position within the international monetary system are the following. Money was created as an accounting tool, which has been ever since mainly used by the political authority to mobilize resources of society for her own interest. Money has obviously also been used for coordination of economic activity between private actors but this is their both historically and logically secondary role. Within the state there has always been more or less evident struggle between various interest groups concerning their contribution to this mobilization and the rules governing the monetary system. Outcomes of this struggle strongly affected the position of the state in the international monetary system. |
