Description Prebiotics are indigestible substances which selectively support the growth or activity of one or a limited number of intestinal bacteria species, most frequently Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species, and thereby positively affect gut microbiome composition. They are not absorbed or hydrolysed in the upper parts of the gastrointestinal tract and so are used in an unchanged form within the large intestine by bacteria as media for growth and increased metabolic activity. This has a desirable influence on large intestinal microflora composition leading to an overall positive effect on the individual’s health. Examples of substances with prebiotic effects include fructooligosaccharides (FOS), galactooligosaccharides (GOS), lactulose, stachyose, and soy oligosaccharides. Oligosaccharides with prebiotic effects are an important component of breast milk. Among other characteristics, these substances have antibacterial effects and favourably modulate the progression of mucosal immunity and positively influence the development of the central nervous system. Supplementing infant formula with prebiotics is a possible method for achieving a favourable effect on intestinal microflora development and composition, thereby resulting in further possible health benefits. This study summarizes current knowledge in this field with an emphasis on aspects usable in practice.
