| Description | Recent legislation requires drivers to secure animals in a vehicle to prevent suffering or injuries of the animal and also injuries to other passengers. The correct placement and the method of securing an animal is not specified by the law and causes confusion among drivers and also police. The aims of this article are to describe and evaluate the behaviour of car drivers whilst transporting a dog within the vehicle, to highlight the risks resulting from incorrect placement of a dog in a vehicle and to discuss medical, legal and economic consequences. The survey among drivers revealed that although a dog represents a family member for most of them, they rarely secure it in a car and believe that the dog will be calm and nothing will happen. In case of a car accident an animal can be the primary cause, when the driver is disturbed or does not pay attention to driving. In any car accident there is a risk of an injury of a pet or human passengers, especially when not restrained. In case of a roadside check the correct placement and the method of securing the dog in the car is evaluated individually by the policeman, which means it is not unified. Most of the questioned policemen considered the rear seats or the combi-boot of the vehicle as a suitable place for a dog. |
