Description Pediatric radiation oncology is a specialized part of complex oncology treatment. The basic principle is access to the child as an individual with incomplete development. Treatment with ionizing radiation provides the local control of the disease, but also has an influence on developing healthy tissue. Late effects of radio- therapy can significantly affect the quality of life of oncological patients due to negative changes in physical and mental development. This article provides an overview of the most serious and most commonly occurring late changes induced by ionizing radiation. The possibilities of contemporary radiotherapy to avoid late effects include limited indications, reduction of the total dose and irradiated target volume, and reasonable use of modern techniques of irradiation. It is important to recognize the risks for each organ system with regard to the age of the child. Radiotherapy in children is provided only if necessary, at the lowest effective doses.
