Description Patients after traumatic amputation of a limb are endangered by secondary infection of the amputation stump, which is a very common and dreaded complication that usually leads to the need of shortening the stump with functional consequences. The progression of the local state can develop into a septic condition, which significantly increases morbidity and may also aggravate the overall prognosis of the patient. A comprehensive approach in combination with early and multiple surgeries is needed as part of the treatment of the local infection. The removal of necrotic tissues in combination with rational use of antibiotic therapy, the usage of modern healing concepts wounds (including vacuum assisted closure) and intensive nutritional care, rehabilitation and psychological support is crucial. The cooperation with a plastic surgeon is a great benefit when dealing with extensive skin and soft tissue losses.
