Description Gonorrhoea is classified as a classic sexually transmitted disease. It is caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a diplococcus that attacks predominantly the urogenital mucosa. The clinical manifestation includes discharge, dysuria and possible complications. Cephalosporins, macrolides, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones and aminoglycosides are administered according to recommended procedures. Increasing resistance of Neisseria gonorrhoeae to above mentioned antibiotics, especially to cephalosporins, leads to the spread of resistant or even multidrug resistant strains in the population and it is a global problem. The article describes the sensitivity to antibiotics in the group of patients with gonococcal infection who were diagnosed at our department over a period of 3 years. The aim of this study is to describe a current situation regarding antibiotic sensitivity in our area and to optimize the therapy with regard to the current increasing resistance to antibiotics.
