Description Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are still one of the most common causes of death in the Czech Republic. Despite the fact that our republic has one of the best sophisticated cardiovascular care systems in the world, more than 40% (100,000) of patients per year still die from CVD. To optimize the care of patients with CVD, it is important not only to identify and treat classic risk factors, but also to identify and treat new ones that can affect not only their morbidity and mortality, but also their quality of life. These new factors include sleep disorders, especially sleep disordered breathing, but also insomnia, sleep deprivation and impaired circadian rhythmicity. These are mostly modifiable risk factors that may contribute to the onset and progression of most CVD. Research as well as clinical practice show that quality sleep is just as important for long-term health as diet or physical activity. The diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders is thus becoming an important and rapidly developing area of cardiology. This creates a new multidisciplinary field called “sleep cardiology”.
