Description The drug coated balloon (DCB) is an advanced improvement of the conventional balloon angioplasty (Plain Old Balloon Angioplasty, POBA) in the treatment of coronary artery disease by using targeted local delivery of antiproliferative drugs (paclitaxel or sirolimus) at the site of the coronary artery lesion. The use of drug eluting stents (DES) or bare metal stents (BMS) is associated with a risk of in-stent restenosis (ISR) or in-stent thrombosis. The indications for the use of DCB as a treatment modality in coronary artery disease have expanded considerably in recent years and it can be used not only for ISR but also for de novo lesions of the native vessel or in the case of increased bleeding risk associated with long-term use of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT). DCB nowadays represents an attractive, effective and safe treatment modality for coronary artery disease.
