Description Pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment of patients with cardiovascular diseases (CVD) is at a high level in the Czech Republic. In order to optimize the care of patients with CVD, it is important not only to identify and treat classic risk factors, but also to identify and treat new ones that can affect not only their morbidity and mortality, but also their quality of life. These new factors include sleep disordered breathing (SDB). The diagnosis and treatment of SDB is becoming an important and rapidly developing area of cardiology due to the proven importance of sleep apnea (SA) as a modifiable risk factor involved in the development and progression of most CVD. This creates a new multidisciplinary field called "sleep cardiology". Sleep cardiology includes not only SDB, but also other sleep disorders related to the cardiovascular system, such as insomnia, sleep deprivation or disturbed circadian rhythmicity. Sleep is a state of physiological rest for the cardiovascular system, and SDB disrupt this state. Under physiological circumstances, there is an increase in the tone of the parasympathetic nervous system during sleep, with a simultaneous decrease in sympathetic activity, heart rate, blood pressure, cardiac output and systemic vascular resistance. The consequence of these changes is peripheral vasodilatation and a decrease in left ventricular afterload. Recurrent episodes of SA disrupt these physiological interactions between sleep and the cardiovascular system.
