Description Focal infection is a theory that assumes the development of chronic diseases by the action of microorganisms from a distant, usually clinically asymptomatic focus. In the last 100 years, it has undergone stages of uncritical acceptance and practical oblivion. In the early days, key scientists promoted focal infection as a theoretical model through their influence and authority. Over time, many authors provided clinical trials, and the results and methodology were later challenged or confirmed by increasingly methodologically correct studies. The current concept of the microbiome has brought back the study of interactions between pathogens and the organism‘s overall health. The story of the focal infection theory is interesting not only in terms of the gradual unravelling of the complex relationships between microorganisms and their host but also exemplifies the often fundamental reversals in theoretical and experimental medicine that complicate clinical practice. Furthermore, it also shows the origins of some practices in dentistry that we have adopted as automatic without knowing why some authors introduced them.
