Description Radiotherapy (RT)-induced oesophagitis is one of the most common local acute adverse effects of RT in many cervical, thoracic and abdominal malignancies treated with both curative and palliative intent. The combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy and higher dose RT are associated with an increased risk of radiation esophagitis, but with modern technologies in RT and adherence to esophageal dosimetric criteria, its incidence and severity can be largely reduced. Supportive treatment options primarily include analgesics, suppression of gastric acid production, dietary modification, treatment of esophageal candidiasis, and maintenance of adequate nutritional status. Esophageal stricture is the most common late adverse effect of esophageal irradiation and can be addressed by endoscopic dilatation. This review article discusses options for prevention and mitigation of these common adverse effects.
