Description Current clinical methods to diagnose gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and related modalities (extraesophageal reflux - EER, Barrett’s esophagus - BE) are invasive, expensive and are usually not tolerated well by some number of patients. Therefore, better tools for diagnosis are warranted, particularly, if they have low cost, are non-invasive and can be performed in a primary care, ideally office, setting. In this article we will outline possible alternative, non-invasive, methods for diagnosing GERD, EER and BE. We shall discuss the use of saliva and exhaled breath condensate as potential novel biological fluids and show some promising biomarkers that could have diagnostic value for future, non-invasive screening.
