Description The intact DRG and DRG after central axotomy displayed approximately the same number of satellite cells. Two weeks after central axotomy we found a reasonable elevation of mean percentage of neurons surrounded by TUNEL+ satellite cells. We found noticeable increase of the value after 4 weeks post transection. The similar increase in mean percentage of TUNEL+ satellite cells was found. A robust increase of TUNEL+ satellite cells was demonstrated in the group of C neurons. Despite evidence of increasing level of apoptosis, the number of satellite cells around individual types of neurons in axotomized DRG maintained at the same level. The results suggest a course of apoptosis simultaneously with proliferation to preserve a balance of the cell number.
