Description Intermediate filaments (IFs) are one of the three major cytoskeletal networks in eukaryotic cells. IFs are composed of diverse proteins that are expressed in cell-type specific matter. The assembly of IFs is highly dynamic process. Vimentin belongs to the group of the IF proteins that have been intensively studied. Vimentin is widely expressed in cells and tissues of developing embryo and in cells of mesenchymal origin of the adult. Vimentin has long been considered to be only a structural cellular component. However, recent studies have revealed that vimentin is also involved in many important cellular processes such as signal transduction, intracellular transport, stres response, apoptosis and cell motility. These discoveries provide the clue how to explain correlation of vimentin expression and tumor growth, invasiveness, metastatic activity and prognosis in various cancers.
